It's Twitter time

Posted at , 19 March 2009 by Lulu Grimes - Deputy editor, olive magazine

There's the ordinary food world and then there is the wonderful world of food via Twitter.

I've become a Twitter junkie. Facebook is good, but with Twitter it's astonishingly easy to find other foodies. And once you've found them they are the most fantastic source of information.

@FoodStories for example, ate at Hawksmoor this week. I've been meaning to try its new burger and now she's posted a great review to harden my resolve. And then there's @LondonEater's review of his meal at Butcher's Block which has such tempting pictures that I had to have lunch again after looking at it. @recipebuzz delivers a stream of recipes to try, @hollowlegs talks about what she eats (great pictures too) and if you're a fan of Gregg Wallace then @puddingface is a direct line to what he is up to: eating, mostly.

The world of drinks is similarly well-served, @wine_scribbler, a Guardian Word of Mouth blogger also recommends @winetravel and @thewinesleuth. If you follow olive magazine you'll get the lowdown on which pub serves the best bar snacks in Britain, what we're testing in the kitchen, and how to avoid the tourists and eat with the locals on our latest city break (plus the odd ramble about our latest food crushes - mmm, pork scratchings).

Twitter is also where you'll hear food news and gossip first, as twitterers post messages via phone text so it is instant. What I like best is that when you send a question out into the ether you'll get an answer almost by return (thank you @silverbrow). Got too many Jerusalem artichokes in your veg box? Someone will know what to do with them; need a restaurant recommendation for York? You'll be inundated with ideas.

The world of online may seem impersonal but it ain't, and if you like talking about food as much as I do then it is an endless source of fascination.

Who do you follow? Or is cyberspace your idea of hell?

Open QuoteAnd here I was thinking that Twitter was just set up to remind me what my friends without children have time to do .... parties, random encounters with z-list celebs, twittering constantly (and if not on Twitter, on Facebook!). Now I have reason to Bookmark Twitter, thanks Goodfood blog ....
