Great burgers

Posted at , 25 April 2008 by Graham Holliday - blogger

If they're good enough for Gordon Ramsay... Yes, the chef behind the restaurant chain, behind the Michelin stars, behind the French scorn, behind the TV show admits he's an absolute sucker for a burger. He reveals,

"People think Americans are obese and burgers are bad for them - they are delicious. In-N-Out burgers were extraordinary. I was so bad, I sat in the restaurant, had my double cheeseburger then minutes later I drove back round and got the same thing again to take away."

And it's the In-N-Out I pang for. I've never ever had one, but I've seen them. Seen plenty of them. The first time I came across an In-N-Out burger was at the Hawaii-based Ono Kine Grindz food blog some four years ago, "Food is prepared fresh AFTER your order is placed. No warmers used here...EVER! The fries are not frozen and are fresh cut."

Open quotationDo not pass up the fries here, ever. Medium-size wedges of crispy high-grade potatoes cooked in cholesterol-free oil, they often still have a little skin attached, a testament to the recent sacrifice on the part of the tuber.Close quotation

A year later burgernuts at A Hamburger Today blogged their take, "Do not pass up the fries here, ever. Medium-size wedges of crispy high-grade potatoes cooked in cholesterol-free oil, they often still have a little skin attached, a testament to the recent sacrifice on the part of the tuber. They are some of the best fries I've eaten." And now our Gordon sings the praise of the In-N-Out and the not-so-secret secret menu.

Unfortunately, in the UK we have this rash of fastfood burger joints masquerading as the real deal coupled with the relatively recent arrival of the gourmet burger chains. None of which grab the imagination when stacked against the near 100 per cent approval rating of the In-N-Out.

So, this is something of a plea. In-N-Out,I can't afford the ticket to Los Angeles to try your carnivorous cuisine, but would you please consider opening in the UK. I'll even try to finish one of these or ask my friends along to attack the ultimate 27x27. Failing that burger watchers, what is the best burger in Britain?

Open QuoteBurger Burger has just opened at the Brewery in Cheltenham. They are independant (chains make the quality go right down) and make their own burgers using locally sourced beef and make their own relishes and have homemade desserts.

Open QuoteThe Cambridge Bar on Young Street in Edinburgh does an excellent range of burgers, you can get any topping with either a homemade beefburger, chicken breast or veggie burger. The chunky chips are a must too!

Open QuoteI love the Angus Beef Burgers at Giraffe. The chips still have the skin on and the burger itself is 100% Aberdeen Angus.

    Bourbon BBQ

Open QuoteI find it very hard to find a good made from scratch Burger. Recently working in the alcohol trade we've tried to look at BBQ cooking sauces from the Buffalo Trace range. Although not available in shops, they are being used more and more in chain pub beer gardens. It goes fantastic on Burgers, cooked with the mince or as a marinade for Fillet steak burgers. If anyone is around West India Quays this weekend 1802 are having an eat meat drink Buffalo event, where you can try out the sauces and marinade. Something for all the family, and all being well the sun will pop out to enjoy a long british summer afternoon BBQ. Has anyone else tasted or used these marinades before? or can you reccomend any good steak marinades?
